    Understanding the Status of Bilingualism among Members of Two Generations in Slovenian Istria

    Položaj dvojezičnosti v slovenski Istri se nedvomno spreminja, o čemer pričajo rezultati splošne mature iz italijanskega jezika, mnenje učiteljev italijanskega jezika in rezultati raziskav v preteklih letih. V prispevku opazujemo položaj dvojezičnosti pri dveh generacijah, in sicer pri mlajših od 20 let in starejših od 40 let, in se na podlagi izsledkov raziskave opredeljujemo glede položaja dvojezičnosti.The status of bilingualism in Slovenian Istria is clearly changing, which is also confirmed by the results of the general secondary-school leaving exam in Italian, the views of Italian language teachers, and the results of studies conducted in previous years.     An Overview of English Dictionaries of Abbreviations: 'n Oorsig van Engelse afkortingswoordeboeke

    This article addresses the position of specialized dictionaries of abbreviations for English. Special attention is given to the macro- and microstructure of English dictionaries of abbreviations, and current available online sources for users are presented. The article compares the micro- and macrostructure of seventeen English dictionaries of abbreviations, including general and language-specific ones, and three online general dictionaries of abbreviations. In the article two contemporary online attempts are also presented; namely, Slovarček krajšav (Kompara Lukančič 2006) and Slovar krajšav (Kompara Lukančič 2011). The article points out that traditional lexicography, mainly its orientation toward compiling functional and detailed entries, should be joined with modern concepts of lexicography oriented toward an extensive number of entries and constant development and improvement of a dictionary as new abbreviations are gradually added. The combination of traditional and modern concepts can develop resources that users need most — namely, a contemporary dictionary of abbreviations. Hierdie artikelbespreek die stand van gespesialiseerde Engelse afkortingswoordeboeke. Spesiale aandag word aan die makro- en mikrostruktuur van Engelse afkortingswoordeboeke geskenk en huidige beskik-bare aanlyn bronne vir gebruikers word voorgestel. Die mikro- en makrostruktuur van sewentien Engelse afkortingswoordeboeke, met algemene sowel as taalspesifieke woordeboeke daarby inge-sluit, asook drie aanlyn algemene afkortingswoordeboeke word met mekaar vergelyk. In hierdie artikel word ook twee eietydse aanlyn pogings, nl. Slovarček krajšav (Kompara Lukančič 2006) en Slovar krajšav (Kompara Lukančič 2011), voorgestel. Daar word daarop gewys dat die tradisionele leksikografie, veral die gerigtheid op die skep van funksionele en gedetailleerde inskrywings, ver-soen moet word met moderne leksikografiese benaderings wat gefokus is op die uitbreiding van die aantal inskrywings en op konstante ontwikkeling en hersiening van 'n woordeboek soos nuwe afkortings geleidelik bygevoeg word. Die kombinasie van tradisionele en moderne benaderings kan 'n hulpbron skep wat gebruikers die nodigste het — naamlik, 'n eietydse afkortingswoordeboek

    This article focuses on the importance of mastering and teaching foreign languages (English) among students, university professors, and support services involved in tertiary education. It provides a chronological overview of the status of foreign language teaching, focusing on modern concepts of language learning (especially e-learning and mobile or m-learning) and presenting the English e-learning tool LanGuide and, within its framework, correspondence resources and a needs analysis. This analysis was conducted as part of cooperation between universities in Slovenia and Romania.V prispevku se usmerjamo na pomen znanja in poučevanja tujega jezika (angleščine), in sicer pri študentih, univerzitetnih profesorjih in podpornih službah, ki so vpete v sektor terciarnega izobraževanja. Pregledno je predstavljen položaj poučevanja jezikov skozi čas, osredinjamo se na novodobne koncepte usvajanja jezika – tu mislimo na učenje na daljavo (e-učenje) in mobilno ali m-učenje – ter predstavljamo orodje za e-učenje angleškega jezika LanGuide in v okviru slednjega resurse s področja korespondence in analizo potreb.     The present article addresses the two contemporary Italian dictionaries of abbrevia-tions Malossini (1999) and Righini (2001) and outlines the position of the Italian abbreviations in some other Italian dictionaries, namely the monolingual Zingarelli (2000) and Garzanti (2021) and bilingual Slovene–Italian (Šlenc 2006) and Italian–Slovene (Šlenc 1997). The aim of the paper is to give an insight into the compilation of the abbreviation dictionary entries in monolingual Italian, bilingual in tandem with the Slovene language and specialised abbreviation dictionaries; highlight the elements present within the dictionary entries; present the deficiencies in compiling and exam-ples of good practice; with the aim of introducing the outcomes in the compilation of the bilingual Italian–Slovene dictionary entries of the Slovene Contemporary Dictionary of Abbreviations. Within the paper we present the composition of the bilingual dictionary entries giving the reader an insight into the elements of the dictionary entry, namely the usage of language and field qualifi-ers, articulated prepositions, i.e. preposizioni articolate (composed of prepositions and definite articles), official translations and additional descriptions. In hierdie arti-kel word die twee hedendaagse Italiaanse afkortingswoordeboeke Malossini (1999) en Righini (2001) aangespreek en word die stand van Italiaanse afkortings in sommige ander Italiaanse woorde-boeke, naamlik die eentalige Zingarelli (2000) en Garzanti (2021) en die tweetalige Sloweens–Itali-aanse (Šlenc 2006) en Italiaans–Sloweense (Šlenc 1997) woordeboeke bespreek. Die doel van die artikel is om die samestelling van die afkortingswoordeboekinskrywings in eentalig Italiaanse, tweetalig Sloweens–Italiaanse/Italiaans–Sloweense en gespesialiseerde afkortingswoordeboeke weer te gee; om die elemente waaruit die woordeboekinskrywings bestaan, uit te lig; om die leem-tes in die samestelling asook voorbeelde van goeie praktyk te beskryf; om sodoende die resultate in die samestelling van die tweetalige Italiaans–Sloweense woordeboekinskrywings van die Slo-weense Kontemporêre Afkortingswoordeboek toe te pas. In die artikel word die samestelling van die tweetalige woordeboekinskrywings weergegee om die leser insig te gee in die elemente van die woordeboekinskrywing, naamlik die gebruik van taal- en veldbepalers, geartikuleerde voorsetsels, m.a.w. preposizioni articolate (saamgestel uit voorsetsels en bepaalde lidwoorde), amptelike verta-lings en addisionele beskrywings. &nbsp

    The volume starts with an overview chapter of studies on bilingualism and bilingual individuals in general, and the particular aspects and characteristics of bilingualism in Slovenian Istria. It continues with three chapters focusing on Italian in the bilingual area of the Slovenian coast. The second chapter presents surveys on the position of bilingualism, the influence of Italian media, the results of the secondary school leaving exams in Italian, and the status of bilingualism in Slovenian schools in the bilingual Littoral communities. The third chapter offers an analysis of texts and documents translated from Slovenian into Italianthat is, bilingual texts available on the websites of the four bilingual municipalities: Koper, Izola, Piran, and Ankaran. The final chapter presents some detailed aspects of studies carried out on administrative texts of the bilingual municipalities, focusing on selected lexical units and acronyms, and offering translation solutions that guarantee and preserve minority rights and offer uniform terminology.Znanstvena monografija se ukvarja s pregledom poglavij, ki se osredinjajo na študije o dvojezičnosti in dvojezičnih govorcih v splošnem smislu ter o posebnih aspektih in značilnostih dvojezičnosti v slovenski Istri. V nadaljevanju se delo osredini na poglavja o vlogi italijanščine na dvojezičnem območju slovenske Istre. V drugem poglavju predstavimo raziskavo o položaju dvojezičnosti, o vplivu italijanskih medijev, o rezultatih mature iz italijanskega jezika ter položaju dvojezičnosti v slovenskih šolah na dvojezičnem območju. Tretje poglavje ponudi uvid v analizo besedil in dokumentov, ki so prevedeni iz slovenskega v italijanski jezik, gre za dvojezična besedila, ki so na voljo na spletnih straneh štirih dvojezičnih občin. Zadnje poglavje se osredini na študije o značilnostih administrativnih besedil štirih dvojezičnih občin tre je usmerjeno na zbrane besedne zveze in obravnava položaj krajšav ter nudi prevodne rešitve ter rabo enotne terminologije
